4th July Fireworks

By special request we're set for a 40 k ITT for next Wednesday, July 4th.  See the map for the route. Start/Finish will be approximately where we did the 300m sprints a couple of weeks ago, there is lots of parking on that quiet street or the many cul-de-sacs in the area. That's just south of Lower Springbank Road near Range Road 31. I hope to do a Garmin certified 40 k course and lets have a challenge and bonus points for under 60 minutes for A, under 65 minutes for B and under 70 minutes for C groups. The plan is to start the first rider at 6:45 pm, try to be there and signed in by 6:30 pm. The start order will be C, B and A.

THERE ARE 2 SETS OF LIGHTS ON THE ROUTE, BOTH ON HIGHWAY 8, ONE INTO ELBOW VALLEY AND THE GOLF COURSE AND A SECOND SET 3 KM FURTHER ALONG. THE PLAN HERE IS YOU MUST STOP IF THE LIGHT IS RED. KEEP TRACK OF THE TIME YOU ARE STOPPED AND IT WILL BE TAKEN OFF YOUR OVERALL TIME. LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU FINISH YOUR TT AND I WILL DEDUCT THE TIME.

I need a couple more volunteers to make it safe.

Mini Giro - WNS June 27

Yea the Tour is almost here and to get us into the spirit let's bring back some memories of the Giro. The mini Giro around Leighton Centre features mini Mortirolo and mini Stelvio. Each loop has about 1000 ft of climbing and the A and B groupd will do 2 loops, C's will do one. For parking - Highway 22X and 37th Street is ok, also there is a little parking near the start/finish. Or ride from town if you can. The start/finish is 500m east of what's shown on the map below. Go south on 37th Street till you hit Township Road 221, take a right and go past Highway 773 (Road to Nepal) about 500 m. I'll need 3 volunteers as well.

Solstice Shootout

Back with a vengence...it's the most exciting 300m in bicycle racing. We all know that bike races are generally long, plodding, and repetitive.  Really, it's just the prologue to the awesome.  Of course, I'm talking about the sprint.  The mano a mano challenge where the winner takes the glory, the fame, the fortune; and the loser the shame, the desolation, and the abject futility when  you realize that you are just not good enough.  Okay, maybe I'm overplaying it a bit but I just watched old NBC Ironman Hawaii coverage and life is apparently a huge set of stuggles that can only be overcome through the use of lots of big words, slow motion photography, and dramatic music.  Of course, a sad story helps but Al Trautwig can make it all better.  Al won't be here this Wednesday but I will try my best to sound a convincing facsimile.
I've checkout out the roadway that we'll be using, and although it's a little dirtier than last year and a little bumpier, it will stand in for the velodrome at Roubaix quite well.  Except for the lack of banking, crowds, tv cameras and generous Belgian hospitatlity.  My suggestion is to park at Springbank where we usually do and take advantage of the 4km distance to the race site to warmp up and size up the comptetition.  I will do sign up in the parking lot at Springbank and then make my way to the race course.  I do discourage parking near the race site as cyclists are perhaps a little too European for the populace and I generally like to maintain an underground feel to the races as, like stories of amateur athletic success,  it attracts little attention.
I hope the map is relatively explanatory, and if you have any questions, let me know.  This event is really a good fun challenge.  We'll have a round robin portion, rank the riders, and take up an elimination ladder.  Last year, a good time was had by all.  I could of course use a couple of volunteers so bring 'em if you got 'em.  Other than that, I'll see every body Wednesday by about 6:30 so we can get started at around 6:45.

Wednesday June 13 - Team Road Race Map

On Wednesday night we will go fom the Priddis Meeting Spot - Highway 22 and 22X. The format will be teams of 5, 6 or 7 with riders from A, B and C on each team. Teamwork is what counts here, the winning team will be the one with all but one or possibly two riders crossing the finish line first. Should be a good prep for Banff. We'll try to start right at 6:30, it's about 38 k for 2 laps which everyone will do. You will need to go neutral on the corners as there is gravel and a few potholes. Ask Harley about the gravel.

Painful then Fun Garmin file.

If anyone wants to know how bad the headwind was on the way out toward Cochrane tonight, have a look at the speed difference between East-to-West and West-to-East.

Have a look !  That headwind was PAINFUL !! That tailwind was crazy fun!

I went full aero tonight so I automatically get a 10min penalty... fair enough.  :)  So my time is 34:47.

Status of Tonight's race

We are going to try to hold the race tonight. There is a currently a severe thunderstorm watch for Cochrane but the radar is showing clearing later this afternoon. If conditions deteriorate between now and start time it may be postponed/cancelled but we hope the race goes on.
