Week 5 - Merckx TT on the Woodland Course

For week 5 we will try to use the original Woodland course. This race is meant for road bikes and non-aero gear. If you want to race your TT bike that's fine but there will be a 10% time penalty.

Time bonus for steel frames and toe clips. 15 second time bonus for anyone wearing a wool jersey. Double points for those riding a Merckx. Triple points, if you are Eddy Merckx.

We will need a few volunteers for this race as I would like to race it. If anyone rides the 1A this weekend or early next week, please leave a comment as to the road conditions.

Standard TT, Woodland Road Course.
Details:  There is some parking near the start of  the race located on the gravel sideroad parallel to highway 1A.  However, we encourage those who can to park in town, or near bearspaw Road and ride to the start.  Spreading out the cars helps with community relations.

We will endeavour to try and start at 6:30pm ish so please try and get there early enough to get signed up and assigned a start number.

Distance is 16km so ride hard and ride consistent, there are a few hills in the closing kilometres.  After you finish, it's and easy neutral ride back to the starting area down Lochend and along the 1A.  Be careful with the 1A, it's a busy piece of road at times.  The coarse starts along the 1A heading West.  You turn off the 1A near the top of the Cochrane Hill at retreat road, following the road as it twists back and turns north.  The next and last turn is right onto 262 which takes you to the finish along 262 a kilometre before you reach Lochend Road.

This is a course we have used many time before but had some construction on it when we tried to us it a few weeks ago.

A note about TT starting order

Last night there was a bit of confusion around starting order. For individual or group TTs, we don't start the riders in order of their category. People start in the order they register. However we do try to accommodate some requests as not everyone likes to start first.

These races are fairly informal so we try to keep things as easy as possible for the volunteers.

Week 4-Team TT results

The race didn't quite go the way I had planned but I hope everyone still enjoyed it.

We could have used a couple more volunteers (hint, hint) to make things go a smoother. For road races we will also require volunteers at the intersections/corners for safety reasons.

There were a few teams from different categories so I will have to figure out a different way to award points.

Thanks again to Peter for volunteering and if anyone remembers the name of the other volunteer and who she was with please let me know so they get the bonus points.

Next week Merckx TT on the Woodland Course in the NW.

Week 4 Team TT

The plan for this week is to pair two two people from each group who will race together as a team. Either select a partner or we'll pair you up with someone. Bring your aero gear if you want.

You can race with someone in a different category but you will be placed in the higher category. If you want to race solo, that's alright too, just show up and we'll start you.

I don't remember the distance for this course but think it is around 15km. If anyone rides it this before the race please post a comment letting us know the distance.

As usual, we'll need a few volunteers for the this course.

Sign up will be at Springbank High School and Recreation Centre where there is plenty of parking. Start time at 6:30 PM

The route will start south from the Springbank Meeting spot to towards the treacherous speed bumps of Mountain River Estates where we'll reverse course and head North back. A quick right on Springbank Road up to the Chicken Ranch where we'll head yet again south on range road 32 towards the end of the road. At the circle, come about again and set course for Lower Springbank Road where you'll turn to right yet again and make for Range Road 31. One last foray south on 31 where we'll turn around again, and the finish north along 31.

Week 3 Road Race on the Millarville Course

We will be using the Millarville loop for the first road race of the season. This is a great course for a Road Race as there is light traffic and a variety of terrain.

The race begins near the parking lot at the intersection of Highways 22x and 22 near Priddis. Racers ride south on Highway 22, West (right) on Highway 549 past Millarville, North (right) on 240 St. W, East (right) on Plummers Road which turns north into 240 St, East (right) on the second part of Plummers Road and ends just before Highway 22.

Category A and B will be doing two loops of the course (52km). Category C will ride one loop (29km). Please register by 6:30 to allow us to put everyone into groups. The groups will start 5 minutes apart with the A group first, then the Bs and finally the Cs.

The course is overall in good condition. 240 Street has a bit of gravel after the turnoff from Highway 549 but the rest of it is fairly new pavement.

We will require at least three volunteers for this race. To signup to volunteer click here

Week 2 results

Riders and volunteers enjoyed great weather and spectacular views for the first mountain stage of this year's WNS. Crankmasters own Karel Bergmann had the fastest time of the evening followed by Steven Kenny and Isaac Beall of Speed Theory. All three were under 30 minutes for the 13 km uphill course.
Please send any corrections to me at mperry.c4@gmail.com

Thanks again to all the volunteers.

Week 2 Hill Climb/TT in Kananaskis

This week's race will start just past the cattle gates near Station Flats on Highway 66 in Kananaskis Country. There is plenty of parking in the trail head parking lot which is about 10km west on Highway 66 of the junction with Highway 22. The race will be one-way and end at the summit just before the end of the highway (approximately 14km). The majority of the route is uphill. We will try to start the race shortly after 6:30 but may give everyone some additional time to get to the starting area.

Week 1 summary

43 people came out last night with conditions that were less than ideal for racing, riding or doing anything outside. The evening started with a strong chilly wind and ended with near whiteout conditions. Trev had the fastest time of the night.

We may have mixed up a couple of the finish times with so many riders crossing the start line fairly close together. Please send any corrections to me at mperry.c4@gmail.com

The results will be used for initial placement into A, B or C categories. People will be moved between the categories depending on how they place in future races.

Thank you to the volunteers, Peter, Cory, Connie and Randy.

The plan for the next few weeks is:
Week 2 hill climb/TT (Highway 66 in Kananaskis)
Week 3 Road Race (Millarville course)
Week 4 team TT (Springbank)
Week 5 Merckx TT (Woodland Course)

Check out the temperature shift !?!?!

Mike Healy about to crush

Guys, here is my Garmin file from tonight. Holy cow... check out the temperature plot near the bottom...

...no wonder my fingers stung at the end and everyone just rode through the finish line and kept going !!

Great to see so many people out tonight. 41 !! That is awesome.  Really looking forward to this series this year.

New start location for tonight's race, but same finish.

Hopefully that makes sense. Due to construction at the intersection at the top of the Cochrane hill there will be a slight change to the route. We will be starting and ending at the same place where the race usually finishes (map of route).

There is no parking at the start/finish line. We recommend parking at the original starting location at Woodland road and riding to the start line (6.5 km). Ride 1.5km west on highway 1A, North on Lochend Road (highway 766) for 4.5km then West on Twp Road 262 for 0.5km. There is plenty of parking on Glendale Road (RR 34) about 3km West of the start and some on RR 33. You may also find some parking on Twp road 262 East of Lochend Road (766).

To give everyone some additional time to ride to the new start location we will start around 6:45.
On the plus side, the next time we run this race we will have some new pavement.

Possible route change for Wednesday's race

Due to construction at the intersection on Highway 1A at the top of Cochrane hill, the route may have to be modified. We will check the road conditions Wednesday and post an update in the early afternoon.

Cue the Valkyries ....

.... it's go time.  Although when we ride, the devastation should only be to our quads.  It is time to start the Wednesday Night Series for 2012.
Series 1, Race 1:  6:30pm, Wednesday May 9th, 2012,  Standard TT, Woodland Road Course.

Repeat after me ..."This is my number. There are many others like it, but this one is mine.  Without me, my number is useless. Without my number, I am useless."  So, your starting number will represent not only your starting order, but your identification number so remember to shout it out at the end so we can record your time.
This is a standard time trial, so aero gear is encouraged but not mandatory.  If you want to ride your regular road steed, then have at it.  If you want to put aero tape on your eyebrows, you won't hear me complain.  Snicker perhaps, but complain no.

This is a course we have used many time before and a great way to start the season.  Although it is a simple course, we do require a small number of volunteers to make it all work.  So now the obligatory begging.  If you have a spouse, sibling, hanger-on, parole officer, parent, or publicist that might like to help out, bring em and we'll put them to work.  Mark Perry is handling the organizing but he would also like to Ride so Peter Heinemeyer will run the show.
Finally, we require that all riders are at least secondary members of Crankmasters.  This is a club event and ABA regulations insist that everyone involved is a member of the club.  It's not hard to join, and it's not expensive.  There is a link on this blog to the Crankmasters Site (http://www.calgarycyling.com/) where you can do the deed electronically.
I'm sure I've forgotten something so if you have any questions, you can email us or post a comment in this blog and we'll scrape up and answer.  Good luck kids, play safe.

Attention!! New place and time for tomorrow's meeting.

Ahhh Calgary in the Spring.  Due to the amazing weather (currently 3 degrees and raining) and the forecast for tomorrow as being pretty much the same we are moving the location and adjusting the time for tomorrow night's WNS introductory meeting.

So...the Wednesday Night Series meeting will now be Wednesday May 2nd  at Speed Theory at 7:00pm.  Thanks to Speed Theory and Trev for arranging the alternate location.
